From July 1st, every steel manufacturer and fabricator must comply with BS EN 1090, Parts 1 & 2: Execution of Steel Structure and Aluminium Structures when supplying frame or steel components. This is determined by the possession of a CE Mark. CE Marking is now mandatory in the UK under the Construction Products Regulation.
BS EN 1090 Part 1 incorporates the implementation of a Factory Production Control (FPC) as any structural work that includes steel requires extensive levels of safety. This documented system must be certified by a notified body. BS EN 1090 Part 2 is the overview of any technical requirements steel should be associated with, such as adequate levels of resistance, durability and stability.
The standard issues four Execution Classes which are ordered from the least onerous (1) to the most onerous (4(). They are:
- Execution 1 e.g. Agricultural Buildings
- Execution 2 e.g. Residential or Commercial Structures
- Execution 3 e.g. Bridges
- Execution 4 e.g. Special Structures
The procedure that is recommended to determine an Execution Class can be found in BS EN 1090 Part 2 and incorporates a four-step process. This includes defining the Consequence Class, selecting a Service Category, selecting a Production Category and finally using a matrix to determine the Execution Class from the information collected.
